The Business Fundamentals with Practicum program at Dunsmuir College equips students with the practical knowledge and professional skills needed for today’s business environment. Admission Requirements

Academic Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following educational qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification, such as GED (General Educational Development) or Adult Basic Education (ABE), supported by either an original transcript or a certified true copy of academic records.

OR

  • Qualify as a Mature Student, being 19 years of age or older and at least one year removed from high school at the time of application.

English Language Proficiency Policy

All programs offered at Dunsmuir College are delivered entirely in English. Therefore, applicants must demonstrate an appropriate level of English language proficiency before admission.

English language proficiency may be demonstrated through one of the following pathways:

 

1. Previous Education in English

Applicants may satisfy the language requirement by successfully completing secondary or post-secondary education where:

  • English was the primary language of instruction, and
  • English is one of the official languages of that country.

 

2. Approved English Language Assessment

Applicants may also meet the admission requirement by achieving the minimum required score on one of the approved English language proficiency tests accepted by Dunsmuir College.

 

3. Accuplacer Assessment (Mature Students)

Mature applicants who are 19 years of age or older, and who are unable to provide sufficient educational documentation due to exceptional circumstances, may qualify through the Accuplacer English Assessment, subject to meeting the eligibility requirements outlined below.

 

Additional English Language Requirements

Certain programs at Dunsmuir College may require a higher level of English language proficiency. These programs may require additional years of education completed in English or alternative evidence of language competency. Any program-specific English language requirements will be clearly identified within the relevant program outline.

English Language Proficiency Through Education

Applicants may demonstrate English language proficiency by providing evidence of education completed in English through one of the following options.

Secondary Education

Evidence of successful completion of full-time secondary education, where English is one of the principal languages of instruction.

Applicants must provide evidence of either:

  • Two (2) years of successfully completed secondary education if the completed grades are Grades 10, 11, and/or 12, or
  • Three (3) years of successfully completed secondary education if the completed grades include Grades 8, 9, 10, 11, and/or 12.

 

Post-Secondary Education

Evidence of two (2) years of full-time post-secondary education completed in English, where English is one of the principal languages of instruction.

Please note that English Language Learning (ELL) or language development courses cannot be included when calculating the required two years of post-secondary education.

Applicants may provide supporting documentation such as:

  • Official high school transcripts
  • BC Adult Graduation Program completion
  • International academic credentials evaluated through recognized assessment agencies including WES, ICES, or IQAS

Countries Where English Is the Primary Language of Instruction

Applicants who have completed their education in any of the following countries or territories may use their educational qualifications to satisfy English language proficiency requirements, provided all other admission criteria are met.

 

American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Islands, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guam, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malta, Mauritius, Montserrat, New Zealand, Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, United States Virgin Islands, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Accepted English Language Tests

Applicants who have not completed qualifying education in English may demonstrate proficiency by achieving the following minimum scores in one of the approved English language assessments.

  • IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum overall score of 46
  • CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment): Minimum overall score of 40
  • CELPIP General: Minimum scores of Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5
  • Duolingo English Test (DET): Minimum overall score of 95
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): Minimum overall score of 43
  • Cambridge English Qualifications: Minimum overall score of 160 or Grade C
  • Cambridge Linguaskill: Minimum B2 level
  • LANGUAGECERT Academic: Minimum B2 level
  • Michigan English Test (MET): Minimum B2 level
  • iTEP Academic: Minimum overall score of 3.5
  • EIKEN: Minimum placement of Grade Pre-1

Accuplacer Assessment (Mature Student Admission)

Applicants may be considered for admission through the Accuplacer English Assessment (Next Generation) if they meet all of the following conditions:

  • Are 19 years of age or older at the start of the program.
  • Are a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Are unable to obtain educational records or provide sufficient evidence of secondary or post-secondary education.
  • Can attest to completing at least three (3) years of full-time secondary or post-secondary education in English within a country where English is one of the principal languages of instruction.

Applicants must achieve the following minimum Accuplacer scores:

  • Reading: 230
  • Writing: 230
  • WritePlacer: 4
